The basic theory and belief is that poker game is a culmination of the principles of many of the earlier card games and domino kiu kiu games. The only underlining criterion is the ‘bluffing’ done to deceive or fool the opponents in all these games.
A very popular belief is that it might have got its origin in China as early as in 968 A.D. It is believed that Emperor Mutsung had played with his wife domino cards on a special occasion like New Year’s Eve. The historians believe that poker might have originated then.
There are also beliefs that poker game must have got its origin from the Egyptians as early as in the 12th century when they are reported to have used cards for playing. There are also facts that prove that cards called “Ganjifa” were commonly used for betting by the Persians in the 16th century. They were also called as treasure cards and were made of ivory or expensive wood and they constituted a set of about 98 cards. It is believed that the Persians also played another card game called “As Nas” and it had about 25 cards and was mostly used in betting games.
The closest version of its origin is that poker has been evolved from a Spanish game called “Primero” dating back to 1526. In this game, three cards were given to each player and the players bluffed the opponents for higher stakes, in spite of having in their possession poor cards, just like in the present day poker game. This game was also said to be a combination of a French game and a German game called “Poque” and “Pochen”.
It is said that when the French colonials migrated to Canada, this game too was propagated throughout the country. From New Orleans, this game became a favorite and spread to the State of Louisiana and from there it slowly found its way across the Mississippi river. And then finally this ‘Cheating game’ as it was fondly called became the most popular game in the United States.
